API key not connecting – IP blacklisted

Rest assured that all of our themes work 100% even if the API key is not activated. The API key is not used to activate theme features, it is used solely for the purpose of connecting to our servers to assist in delivery of updates and to ensure we can support you best should you require assistance.

If you are experiencing issues activating your API key there may be a small chance that this is a result of your server IP being blacklisted. To Check if your server IP is blacklisted and what to do next, please follow the steps below.

Your website will be hosted on a server, and that server will have a unique IP address. Most websites run on a server with a static IP address, so it will always be the same. Please follow the steps below to find your websites server IP address.

  • Scroll down to find your IP address under the DB-IP section.
We employ a variety of security platforms to ensure the security of all our users. To verify whether a particular IP address is secure or not we rely on a number of sources, one such source is AbuseIPD. Please follow the steps below to find out if your websites server IP address is currently blacklisted.

  • Go to abuseipdb.com.
  • Add your websites server IP address and press “Check IP”.
  • If your IP address is blacklisted you will receive a message stating “was found in our database”.
  • The following screenshot shows the message which appears if your IP address is not blacklisted.
The only party that can have the IP blacklist lifted is your webhost, as they are the ones that control your web server. If your IP address is blacklisted please contact your webhost and provide them with the server IP and AbuseIPD report as proof that the server is blacklisted.

Important: Use of a blacklisted server is heavily discouraged. Your site is likely to be penalised in a number of factors, and operating on a blacklisted server can cause significant security risks. As such we would recommend you switch to another webhost should your host be unable to have the blacklist lifted.

If you find that your servers IP address any issues after performing the above checks, it is possible that your webhost is masking your sites IP. In this instance please contact your webhost and confirm whether or not they implement masked IP addresses. If so, repeat the above steps using your origin IP which you webhost can provide.

In the meantime, until your host has resolved this issue and had your IP whitelisted you may be unable to update using the API key. Rest assured, you can still update manually. We have a number of knowledge base articles which show how to go about doing this:

Should you experience any issues updating please do submit a support ticket and a member of our support team will be on hand to assist further.

IP addresses can be blacklisted for many reasons, often it’s nothing to do with your site specifically. If you’re on a shared hosting account, there are likely to be many thousands of websites that share that server. Malicious activity from any one of those sites can unfortunately result in the IP address for the entire server being blacklisted.
